Syllabus overlap information
We offer an overlap period in the first year of a new instrumental/singing syllabus. During the overlap period, candidates may follow specific requirements from the preceding syllabus.
Due to Covid, we have extended this overlap for some syllabuses to support learners. However, if possible, we always advise candidates to prepare for their exam using the newest valid syllabus.
Overlap periods only apply to the specific syllabuses and requirements listed on this page. We will add information for other syllabuses during the final year of their published validity period.
Select a syllabus below to check the length of the overlap period and the syllabus requirements covered.
-
Performance Grades – extended overlap for candidates in China
- The original overlap period (to 31 December 2020) has been extended due to Covid and lack of exam opportunities. This also provides time for candidates unable to take a Practical Grade exam to learn an extra piece and transfer to a Performance Grade.
- Candidates in China may play their three set pieces from the 2016–2019 syllabus lists until 31 December 2022. The submission deadline for the video recording must be on or before this date.
- All three set pieces must be from the same syllabus. The fourth, own-choice piece is not affected by overlap arrangements.
- The Performance Grades syllabus for 2020–2023 should be followed for all other exam requirements.
- There will be no further extension to the overlap period.
- Any candidates starting to prepare for an exam in 2022 should use the 2020–2023 syllabus.
Practical Grades
- As we do not expect to be able to offer face-to-face Practical Grades in China in 2022, candidates may wish to learn an extra piece and transfer to a Performance Grade. We are accepting 2016–2019 repertoire in Performance Grades until 31 December 2022 to allow time for this (see above).
- The 2016–2019 Practical Grades syllabus will not be valid for exams after 31 December 2022.

- Candidates who wish to use set pieces from the old (1990–2019) Percussion syllabus should follow the 1990–2019 Performance Grades syllabus.
- The provision of this syllabus allows candidates to transfer their exam preparation to a Performance Grade.
